Food penalty for Monmouth hotel

Wednesday, 17 February 2010

MONMOUTH’S Riverside Hotel has been
fined £600 plus £800 costs for keeping food
past its use-by date. The case was heard at
Cwmbran Magistrates Court on Friday 5th
February. The operator, Foldstick Ltd, pleaded
not guilty to three offences under the Food
Labelling Regulations 1996.
Ioan Gealy, prosecuting for Monmouthshire
County Council, told the court that during a
routine inspection on 14th September 2009, a
council officer found three items of food past
their use-by dates in the refrigerator: a tub of
coleslaw, some beef mince and chicken fillets.
He said, “Under the Food Labelling Regulations
1996, you cannot sell food after its use-by
date under any circumstances, even if the food
has been frozen.”
