Death of Lord Raglan

Wednesday, 27 January 2010

FitzRoy John Somerset, the fifth Baron Raglan, died at Abergavenny’s Nevill Hall Hospital on Sunday 24th January after a short illness. He was 82.
Lord Raglan was patron of several charities, and an active albeit self-effacing member of the local Usk community, frequently allowing charity events to be held in the house and gardens of his Cefntilla Court home.
The former Welsh Guard was also well known for his love of vintage cars, Bugattis in particular: he was patron of the Bugatti Owners Club, and owned at least three cars made by the marque during his lifetime.
Tribute from Usk Farmers Club
USK FARMERS’ CLUB was sad to learn of the death of Lord Raglan on 24th January. Lord Raglan was extremely well known, well liked and very well respected within the local farming community.
He had been the Patron of Usk Farmers’ Club, and hence Usk Agricultural Show, for over 25 years – and indeed, the show is now held on ground that Lord Raglan once owned. He will be sadly missed by his many friends, not only within the Farmers’ Club, but also in the many other organisations of which he was a part, locally and nationally. His winning entries in the Marmalade classes of the show’s Homecraft section will be much missed, as will the many Fork Suppers held at Cefntilla.
We would like to pass our condolences to his family, and also to those people who were close to him and supported him at Cefntilla over many years. Lord Raglan, a man of Monmouthshire, will be sorely missed, as a friend of many and a true gentleman who had time for everyone.
