THERE's been more sporting success at Haberdashers' Monmouth Schools in the last few weeks.

Both the girls’ U18s 1st XI and U14s hockey teams secured places in the National Regional Finals and finished runners-up after hard fought matches in Cardiff last week.

The U18s triumphed over Glantaf, Llandaff Cathedral, Brynteg, Christ College Brecon, and Brynhyfryd teams, topping the leaderboard and securing their place in the finals against Glantaf.

But in a tight clash, it was the Cardiff outfit who won out this time to claim the national title, just edging out the Monmouth girls 3-2.

The U14s also defeated the likes of Llandaff Cathedral, Milford Haven, Botwnnog and Tywyn, and drew with Howell's School, to claim top spot and secure their place in the final against the latter. Once again, the capital side got the upper hand, winning 3-0.

Sorrel Wilson, Head of Hockey, said of the U18s efforts: “Every individual girl worked incredibly hard and fought right to the end of each match.

"They displayed passion, determination and resilience and ended up beating teams who, in the past, we have struggled to beat.”

Sorrel, who trains and accompanied both teams, added: “They played some tough hockey in the semi-final rounds, and didn’t make life easy for themselves.

"However they displayed some intelligent and mature hockey and their passion and determination really shone through.”

The school has also witnessed two fantastic wins for the U14s and U12s Rugby squads.

The U14s squad travelled to the West of England Rugby Tournament , bringing home the cup after defeating Queen Elizabeth School, Kings Taunton, Bristol Grammar School, Millfield and Cheltenham College.

Adding to the excitement of their win, three Monmouth players, Felix Squirrell, Rafe Llewelyn and Morgan Boret were singled out of 16 teams by the Sevens Officials in the running for ‘Man of the Tournament’.

Morgan was awarded the title, a fantastic end to a tremendous day, leaving the entire team and supporters incredibly proud.

Haberdashers’ Monmouth also hosted the annual Monmouth School U12s Rugby 7s Tournament, with 19 schools attending from England and Wales to compete.

Following a full-on day of matches, the tournament progressed to the knockout stages with teams competing for the Bowl, Plate and Cup competitions.

Monmouth’s own U12s team won the Bowl, defeating Bishop of Hereford School.

Katherine Lady Berkley’s School won the Plate, and Ysgol Glantaf won the overall tournament.
