Car collides with five motorbikes near Usk
Wednesday, 22 May 2013
A car has collided with five motorbikes in Llangybi.
Gwent Police were called the scene near the Cwrt Bleddyn Hotel at approximately 7.20pm last night (Tuesday 21st May).
The collision involved a red Citroen car and five motorbikes. One of the motorcyclists, a 68 year old man from Monmouth, was seriously injured and conveyed to Frenchay hospital by air ambulance which is where he currently remains in a stable condition. Three of the other motorcyclists were also conveyed to hospital with fractures. The road was temporarily closed from Usk to Caerleon while emergency services were in attendance but reopened in the early hours of this morning, (Wednesday 22nd May).
Residents of Llangybi report a group of around 20 motorcyclists exceeding the national speed limit (60mph) outside the town. The accident happened around 200 metres beyond Cwrt Bleddyn Hotel and Spa.
Residents say that the particular set of bends in the road used to have the solar powered flashing warning lights because there is a negative camber to the road which makes cornering difficult. But these warning signs were removed some time ago.
The roads in this area are winding, with high banks and hedges reducing onwards visibility. There are also many side roads which can increase the danger to speeding drivers.
Police officers are appealing for any information or witnesses. Call 101 quoting log 474 21/05/13.

This prompts another question about noise. Our relatively traffic-free roads in this beautiful part of the world are understandably attractive to bikers. I appreciate a level of noise is required to alert other road users to a bike’s presence but would genuinely love to know if the riders of noisy bikes or those in packs give any thought at all to the peace they shatter for miles around?

This local group of mature, experienced riders and the car driver and passenger involved were unfortunate to be at the wrong place and the wrong time, as is often the nature of accidents... For a mature motorcyclist to survive a head-on crash with a car and only have some broken bones suggests that the speed was moderate and the range of protective equipment worn performed admirably.
